Mount Washington Trail

In our world of remote schooling, it’s especially crucial we, as parents, find ways to care for our own well-being.  One of the things I love to do, while the sun is still here, is hike.

My favorite hikes: the journey filled with wonder, over things small and large, but then the ultimate meaning revealed when we step from the trees and see the world as it is, not as our worries (Covid, politics, the children causing my rapid greying) would make it; the world of highways and skyscrapers far below and in the distance, the revelation of mountains larger than we on the horizon, and a sky open with infinite potential.  I love those moments.

Mount Washington’s trailhead is situated just off Exit 38 on the I-90.  It’s an arduous and wonderful workout; the view: spectacular.

I initially visited the trail a few weeks prior with my three kids (twin 6 year-olds and an 8 year-old).  If you don’t know me, I am sometimes a little over-ambitious, including with my children, and as the three of them began to breakdown a mile from the top, I knew I had pushed them too far!  Nevertheless, when we got down to the car, the sense among all was unfaltering pride and accomplishment.

I redid the hike on my own a few weeks afterward, doing that last mile and seeing the top.  I’d recommend the complete loop for our upper classes, but the view along the way, could make even a shortened hike a worthy and exciting adventure for our Sky Hall.

Bring lots of water.  There is a spring gushing from a rock where I refilled my bottle.
